Dr Hilary Wynne has received a British Academy/Leverhulme Small Grant (https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/funding/ba-leverhulme-small-research...) to examine expectation during sentence processing in expert listeners. Using EEG, the project (running from 2025-2027) will examine brain responses to lexical items in two different types of sentence environments in a specialised language (Aviation English). Overall, we expect this data to provide crucial evidence that “the expert brain” is cued to use special (expert) information when processing specialised language, and that violations in the standard (expected) language have deliberate and compelling effects in these listeners.
